Web streaming leader Netflix has announced a prequel to SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster two part “Baahubali” series. The prequel will explore the journey of Sivagami from a rebellious and vengeful girl to a wise and unequalled queen.
“Baahubali: Before the Beginning”, will be a prequel to “Baahubali: the Beginning” and “Baahubali: the Conclusion”, and is based on Anand Neelakantan’s popular book, “The Rise of Sivagami.”
Directors Deva Katta and Praveen Sataru will wield the megaphone for the series. Rajamouli said the world of “Baahubali” is extensive and immersive with strong characters and larger than life kingdoms and while they explored a part of it in the two films, there are other more dramatic stories to explore.
“I am very excited that this is being adapted as a Netflix Original Series. With Netflix as our partner, we have the opportunity to create a rich and riveting series and take this quintessential Indian epic to the world, which is very gratifying to me as a storyteller,” he said in a statement.
Prasad Devineni, Producer, Arka Media Works, said that they have been working for over a year to develop the prequel as a Netflix original series.
Released worldwide between 2015 and 2018, the “Baahubali” films were made on a combined budget of $70 million and collected $370 million globally. Presented in Tamil and Telugu, the films featured South Indian stars Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Ramya Krishnan, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia. In addition to their international success, the feature films scored rare all-India releases.
