Congress afraid of ‘Chowkidar ka danda’, says Vivek Oberoi

GHAZIABAD: Actor Vivek Oberoi, who is playing the lead role in the upcoming biopic ‘PM Narendra Modi’, said that the Congress party is afraid of “chowkidar ka danda” (Security guard’s wooden stick).

“I don't understand why some people are overreacting like this. Why are such senior and famous lawyers like Abhishek Singhvi ji and Kapil Sibal ji wasting time on filing a PIL on such a modest film? Don't know if they are scared of the film or of Chowkidar's 'danda'”, news agency ANI tweeted Vivek Oberoi as saying.

“We are not projecting Modi ji as larger than life, he already is larger than life. We are not projecting him as a hero, he already is a hero, not only for me but for crores of people in India and abroad. Its an inspirational story which we brought to the screen”, he added.

The actor also asserted that the movie is not funded by any political party and is not part of any propaganda.

“This film is an inspirational story, it’s not funded by anyone, proper documentation has been submitted. The allegation can be made on anyone”, he said.

Ever since BJP kick-started its ‘main bhi chowkidar’ campaign ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, ‘chowkidar has become a part of political discussions.

Directed by Omung Kumar, the biopic will traverse the journey of Modi from his beginnings to his years as chief minister onto his landmark win at the 2014 general election and being nominated as prime minister.

Recently, the film ‘PM Narendra Modi’ came under the ECI scanner after Congress and left parties complained to the poll body, saying that it violates the Model Code of Conduct.

However, the Bombay High Court on Monday disposed-off the PIL.

On March 19, the filmmakers had announced the release of Vivek Oberoi-starrer biographical drama on Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been preponed by a week and the film will now open on April 5.

‘PM Narendra Modi’ was earlier scheduled to hit the theatres on April 12.

"We are bringing this film a week early on public demand. There is a lot of love and anticipation among the people and we don't want them to wait longer. This is a story of 1.3 billion people and I can't wait to show it to them," film's producer Sandip Ssingh had said in a statement.

Boman Irani, Manoj Joshi, Prashant Narayanan, Zarina Wahab, Barkha Sengupta, Anjan Shrivastav, Yatin Karyekar, Ramakant Dayma, Akshat R Saluja, Jimesh Patel and Darshan Kumaar are part of the cast.

Vivek's father Veteran actor Suresh Oberoi and Anand Pandit are co-producing the film along with Ssingh.
