Congress President Rahul Gandhi files nomination from Amethi


AMETHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday filed his nomination from Amethi for 2019 Lok Sabha polls in the presence of Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Robert Vadra.

Rahul Gandhi reached the Collectorate to file his papers after a roadshow through the town.

Thousands of party workers including women and youth gathered waving party flags and raising slogans as they started their roadshow

He rode on the rooftop of a truck, flanked by sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, her husband Robert Vadra and her children Raihan and Miraya.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was not part of the roadshow but she also joined him at the election office.

He has moved on a narrow road in his constituency Amethi in Uttar Pradesh to file his nomination papers in the Collectorate.

For the second consecutive time, Rahul Gandhi will contest against Union textile minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani from Amethi. She was lost to Rahul Gandhi in 2014.

Rahul Gandhi is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala and filed his nomination papers from there on April 4.

He had submitted the nomination papers before the district Collector A R Ajayakumar at the district headquarters in Kalpetta in Kerala

On that day, Gandhi was accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi and senior Congress leaders including K C Venugopal and Mukul Wasnik.

Amethi goes to the polls on May 6 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, which begin on Thursday and Wayanad will vote on April 23

The counting of votes will be held on May 23.
