JAIPUR: After wresting power from Bharatiya Janata Party in the Assembly elections last year, Congress has consolidated its position in Rajasthan by registering an impressive victory in 23 of the 49 urban civic bodies.
The BJP secured a win only in six urban civic bodies while others bagged 20, according to an India Today report. Prior to the elections, the BJP and the Congress controlled 21 municipal bodies each while the remaining seven were with others.
The voting to elect nearly 2,105 ward councillors was held on Saturday in which nearly 72 per cent voters exercised their franchise. A total of 7,944 candidates were in the fray. The election for chairman and deputy chairman of urban local bodies will be held on November 26 and 27, respectively.
Reacting to the election results, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the results were as per the expectations of the Congress party. "It is a matter of great jubilation that people have given us the mandate considering our government's performance. We are progressing in the direction."
Congress leader and state minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said the Congress won more than two-third seats in the Rajasthan local body elections. "The results are a lesson for the BJP. People have rejected the BJP over issues like Article 370 and Ram temple."
The Congress returned to power in Rajasthan in December 2018 after defeating the BJP. However, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led NDA swept the state by winning all 25 seats.
