NEW DELHI: A Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) employee was arrested on Monday from BrahMos missile unit in Maharashtra's Nagpur for allegedly leaking technical secrets to Pakistan.
Nishant Agarwal was employed at a BrahMos production centre near Nagpur over the last four years. He is suspected to have shared classified information and technical data about the BrahMos missile system with agencies from Pakistan.
The engineer was living in a rented accommodation on Wardha Road since the last year, his landlord Manohar Kale said.
He was arrested in a joint operation by the Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squads (ATS) at DRDO's Wardha Road facility in Nagpur. Agencies are also trying to find out the details that he might have shared with Pakistan.
The DRDO employee was detained on charges of suspicion and is currently being questioned. Sources said that some suspicious material was recovered from his Personal computer.
"Very sensitive information was found on his personal computer. We also found evidence of him chatting on Facebook with Pakistan-based operators”, said ATS IG, Aseem Arun.
The BrahMos is a medium-range ramjet supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarine, ships, aircraft, or land. It is the fastest cruise missile in the world.
Brahmos is a joint venture between DRDO and the NPOM of Russia. The highly versatile precision strike weapon has been operationalised in the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. It has established itself as a major "force multiplier" in modern-day complex battlefields with its impeccable land-attack and anti-ship capabilities along with multi-role and multi-platform abilities.
