JAIPUR: Former Prime Minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh filed his nomination paper for the by-poll to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan on Tuesday.
Singh filed the nomination papers in the chamber of the returning officer in the Rajasthan Assembly.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot, AICC general secretary in-charge of Rajasthan Avinash Pande, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal, chief whip Mahesh Joshi, Health minister Raghu Sharma accompanied the senior congress leader.
The Rajya Sabha seat from Rajasthan had fallen vacant after Madan Lal Saini, the BJP state President, passed away from the desert state.
Manmohan Singh had been a Member of Parliament in the Upper House for the Congress party from Assam for almost three decades.
He was prime minister for 10 years until his Congress-led UPA government was defeated by the BJP in 2004.
As per the schedule released by the Election Commission, the last date for the filing of nomination papers is August 14 and the scrutiny of papers will be done on August 16.
The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is August 19 and the polling will be held on August 26.
The counting of votes will take place on the same day at 5 pm.
