NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday attacked the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over its treatment of farmers here.
Her attack on the UP government came over a media report that in separate incidents, two farmers from Mahoba and Hamirpur allegedly committed suicide over debt issues.
"The UP government has devised new ways to harass the farmers. It cheated in the name of loan waiver. Jailed farmers in the name of electricity bill," Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
“No compensation is being given for the crops damaged due to floods and rains. The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh only remembers farmers in advertisements”, she claimed.
On September 25, she had criticized the UP government for the same issue. She had alleged that the issue of farmers interest was only limited to advertisements and billboards under the BJP government here.
"The issue of farmers interest under the Uttar Pradesh BJP (government) has been limited only to advertisements and billboards," she had said.
"The farmers are not getting their dues. They do not get proper electricity supply, but their electricity bills have been hiked. They have been cheated in the name of the loan waiver. And they are also being insulted," she had claimed.
Her criticism had come over a media report that a farmer's son committed suicide in Saharanpur over alleged harassment by the electricity department and the police.
