19 killed, several injured as Air India Express from Dubai crashes in Kerala's Karipur airport

As many as nineteen people were killed as an Air India Express flight from Dubai skidded off the runway while landing at the Calicut International Airport (Karipur Airport).

 

The deceased included flight's pilot Commander Captain Deepak Sathe and co-pilot Akhilesh.

Injured have been taken to various hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts. Conditions of some of them are serious.

Air India Express passenger plane broke into two after landing in the southern city of Calicut on Friday at 7:40 pm.
The IX1344 flight from Dubai was operated as part of the Vande Bharat repatriation mission.

The aircraft, carrying 190 including 174 passengers and six crew, fell into a 35-feet deep gorge and split into two.

The locals at Karipur responded quickly and effectively soon after the Air India Express flight IX 1344 plunged into a 30-ft valley with a loud thud.

They came running to the spot within minutes after the accident and began carrying the injured passengers and crew in whatever vehicles they got to hospitals.

According to the report, the flight continued running to the end of the runway after landing and fell down in the valley, then broke into two portions. 

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had asked police and fire force personnel to take all measures. 

“Have instructed Police and Fire Force to take urgent action in the wake of the plane crash at the Kozhikode International airport (CCJ) in Karipur. Have also directed the officials to make necessary arrangements for rescue and medical support”, he had tweeted.

President, Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and several others offer their condolences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to the CM and expressed grief over the incident.

“Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Kerala CM @vijayanpinarayi Ji regarding the situation. Authorities are at the spot, providing all assistance to the affected”, he had tweeted.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had directed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to rush to the spot and assist in the rescue operations. 

“Distressed to learn about the tragic accident of Air India Express aircraft in Kozhikode, Kerala. Have instructed NDRF to reach the site at the earliest and assist with the rescue operations”, AMit shah had tweeted.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will visit Karipur airport on Saturday morning. He is expected to reach Karipur on a chopper by 9 am. He also visit the injured in hospitals.
