3 inmates of Changanassery destitute home dies in a week, govt orders probe

KOTTAYAM: District Collector P K Sudheer Babu ordered a magisterial probe into the three mysterious deaths in a shelter home at Thrikodithanam near Changanasserry in Kottayam district within a week.

Kerala Health Minister K K Shylaja has said that a committee was formed to probe the three deaths.

The minister added that a detailed investigation would be held by the health secretary-led committee, which would include HODs of the medical college.

As per the Health minister's directive, a panel of doctors have been constituted to study the cause of the death of the three people.

There is a mystery after three inmates of a destitute home at Changanassery here in the district died within a week.

The deceased were inmates of ‘Puthujeevan’, a destitute home located at Thrikkodithanam in Changanassery.

The victims were identified as Sherin, Gireesh and Yohannan.

Two of the inhabitants of the shelter home died last week. However, the third victim died at the Kottayam Medical College Hospital on Saturday.

The post-mortem report of the first inmate stated that pneumonia as the cause of death. Following this, two more inmates died.

The post-mortem of the third inmate who died on Saturday was being held. After the autopsy, the internal organs will be sent for chemical tests.

Meanwhile, six others are undergoing treatment at Thiruvalla for lung-related ailments, vomiting and swelling on legs.

The blood samples of the patients were tested last week and the health department confirmed that they had no viral diseases.

According to the Manorama News report, Kottayam District Medical Officer Dr Jacob Varghese also conducted Coronavirus and H1N1. A toxicology test would also be conducted.

Locals alleged that the inmates of the centre run by the trust were subjected to torture at the facility, and demanded a thorough probe into the cause of the deaths.

Most of the inmates in the destitute home, run by a retired police officer, are mentally unstable.

According to the Mathrubhumi News report, following the three deaths, health department officials including the District Medical Officer (DMO) held inspections at the destitute home.

According to the Health department officials, nothing suspicious was found inside the destitute home, as per the preliminary assumption, infections caused by continuous usage of medicines led to the deaths.
