About 3,000 athletes under Khelo India, over 10,000 youth under SAI schemes selected for further training: Govt


The identified promising talents and teams are provided support of modern sports science, exposure abroad under experts  and participation in international events

A total of 2932 athletes under Khelo India scheme and 10,248 athletes under various SAI sports promotional schemes have been selected for further training to excel in various national and international competitions.

Also, under the schemes of the Department of Sports, the identified promising sportspersons and teams are provided support of modern sports science, exposure abroad under experts of respective sports discipline and participation in international events, said the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

In order to tap the sporting talent, under the component ‘Talent Search and Development’ of Khelo India Scheme of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), selection of talented sports persons is carried out as per competitive performance and assessments made through scientifically designed battery of tests. The selection is not done state-wise, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju informed the Lok Sabha that his ministry is running schemes for promotion of sports as well as attaining excellence in sports including Khelo India, assistance to National Sports Federations, special awards to winners in international sports events and their coaches and national sports awards, pension to meritorious sports persons.

The ministry is also promoting rural and indigenous/tribal games under the ‘Khelo India Scheme’ and through the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ programme. Most athletes benefitting under these schemes come from rural areas, the minister said.
