Andhra Pradesh CM Jaganmohan Reddy writes to PM Modi, seeks Bharata Ratna for legendary singer Balasubrahmanyam

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister said this will be the highest recognition to SP Balasubrahmanyam's remarkable work which lasted for five decades and stays in the memory of people.


Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Monday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to award 'Bharat Ratna' on legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, who passed away on September 25.

"As a tribute to the legendary singer for his outstanding contribution in the field of music and art, I request you to confer the Bharat Ratna on him," the Chief Minister said.

CM Jaganmohan Reddy said this will be the highest recognition to SP Balasubrahmanyam's remarkable work which lasted for five decades and stays in the memory of people. 

Singer-actor SP Balasubrahmanyam passed away on September 25 following coronavirus complications.

SP Balasubrahmanyam was tested positive for Covid-19 in the first week of August. He was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of MGM Healthcare after his condition deteriorated.

Initially, he had shown mild symptoms of Covid-19 and despite being advised home quarantine, had chosen to be admitted to the hospital for the health of his family. 

Earlier, he had posted a video on his official Facebook page, stating that he had chest congestion for a few days, along with cold and fever. 

After two weeks, he was put on the ECMO support, a heart-lung assistance machine, after he had suffered a setback in his health.

Earlier this month, the singer's film-maker-son SP Charan had said that his father had tested negative for Covid-19 but continues to be on ventilator.

Balasubramaniam sang over 40,000 songs in a career spanning nearly 55 years. He sang songs in 16 Indian languages.

Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam, also referred as SPB, was an Indian musician, playback singer, music director, actor, dubbing artist and film producer who worked predominantly in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam films.

He has garnered six National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer for his works in four different languages; Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi; 25 Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards for his works towards Telugu cinema, numerous other state awards from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In addition, he garnered the Filmfare Award, and six Filmfare Awards South.

In 2012, he received the state NTR National Award for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2016, He was honored with the Indian Film Personality of the Year consisting of a Silver Peacock Medal.He is a recipient of the Padma Shri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2011) from the Government of India.
