Armed forces felicitate Covid-19 warriors across India


Healthcare workers, police personnel and other corona warriors were felicitated by the armed forces on Sunday as a nationwide moral boosting gesture.

Flypasts by fighter jets over state capitals, aerial flower shower on major Covid-19 hospitals and performances by military bands outside them across the country marked thanks giving exercise aimed at honouring doctors, paramedics, sanitation staff and other front-line workers battling the pandemic.

The COVID-19 ''warriors'' in many places responded to the rate gesture by taking videos and photos from their mobile phones while some others clapped.

Cities where fighter jets conducted fly-pasts include Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Patna and Lucknow. Transport aircraft of the force carried out similar drills in a number of cities including Srinagar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur, Bhopal, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Thiruvananthapuram.

Separately, Indian Navy helicopters showered petals on Kasturba Gandhi hospital and naval medical hospital Ashwini in Mumbai, GMC and ESI hospitals in Goa, Ernakulam General Hospital in Kochi, Government TB and Chest hospital in Vizag and GB Pant hospital in Port Blair.

Military bands played "patriotic tunes" outside various civil hospitals treating coronavirus patients across the country, media reports said. Navy officials said the Western Naval Command be illuminating five naval ships from 7:30 PM to 11:59 PM off the Gateway of India in Mumbai.

They would display banners like "India Salutes Corona Warriors" and will sound the siren of the ships and fire flares at 7:30 PM at anchorage. Additionally, the naval air stations at Goa would organise a human chain on the runway to honour the 'corona warriors'.

The Eastern Naval Command will illuminate two ships at anchorage from 7:30 pm to midnight at Visakhapatnam coast. In Kerala, The southern naval command will lay anchor ICG units from Beypore, Kochi and Vizhinjam at Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram beaches and will be fully illuminated.

AF Chopper Showers Flower Petals on Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad and Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh thanked the armed forces for paying tributes to all frontline workers battling the novel coronavirus outbreak in India. "I thank the Armed Forces for their special initiatives like flypasts, showering flower petals and several other performances to express gratitude towards medical professionals, police and other frontline warriors," tweeted Rajnath Singh.

General Secretary of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA), AIIMS-Delhi, Dr Srinivas Rajkumar T also thanked the armed forces for the tribute. "We wholeheartedly appreciate the gesture by Army, Navy and air force for services rendered by health care workers but the government should also pay attention to shortcomings in preparedness which will decide the final outcome of the battle against Covid-19," Dr Srinivas Rajkumar T said (with inputs from agencies)
