Autos, cycle rickshaws allowed to ply in Tamil Nadu from Saturday

Tamil Nadu government on Friday permitted plying of auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws in the state barring Chennai and in COVID-19 containment zones from Saturday onwards.


As per the statement from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the directive does not apply to Chennai and containment zones. Only one passenger will be allowed per vehicle, and the operating times will be 7 am to 7 pm 

Both the driver and the passenger should wear a mask. The vehicles should be sanitised thrice a day and the passenger should be given sanitiser.

The latest order issued by the state government on May 17 on the extension of COVID-19 lockdown till May 31 has given no relaxations in 12 districts including Chennai.

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu witnessed 776 COVID-19 cases, As many as seven deaths took the death toll to 94, while the overall positive cases touched 13,967.

Among the Indian states, Maharashtra remains to be the worst affected with 41,642 positive COVID-19 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (13,967), Gujarat (12,905), and Delhi (11,659).
