Circle Inspector arrested in connection with Varappuzha custody death

South India

KOCHI: The investigation into the Varappuzha custodial death case has taken a new turn with the special investigating team arresting North Paravur circle inspector Crispin Sam. His arrest was recorded after he was questioned by the SIT chief Sreejith at Aluva Police club. He has been accused of fabricating evidence to save his colleagues involved in the torture of Sreejith and detaining him illegally.

The investigation conducted so far has found the police had wrongly included Sreejith in the list of 13 people accused of assaulting his neighbor Vasudevan. Sreejith was taken into custody along with 12 others after Vasudevan committed suicide.

The police had claimed that they had taken Sreejith and his brother Sajith into custody on the basis of a statement given by Vasudevan’s son Vineesh.  To corroborate the claim, they also released a signed statement purported to have been given by the complainant to the Varapuzha police a day after their arrests. This included the names of S R Sreejith and his brother.

The SIT found that this was fabricated by the police to save the actual culprits involved in the torture death of Sreejith. The SIT found that the original complaint filed on April 6 had contained the names of only Vipin, Vinchu, Thulasidas, Vinu, Ajith and Sarath and “eight others who could be identified on sight".

According to sources, the SIT had found serious procedural lapses on the part of the CI in recording the arrest of Sreejith and co-accused. Based on the findings, the investigators also sought a legal opinion with regard to arraigning the CI in the case.

The police had earlier arrested Varappuzha sub-inspector and three civil police officers in connection with the death. The Rural SP A V George, who deployed three members of his special squad to take Sreejith into custody has been removed from the post and shifted to the police training institute at Thrissur.
