COVID-19: Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister R Doraikkannu passes away

The 72 year-old Minister breathed his last late on Saturday night, Kauvery Hospital Executive Director Dr Aravdindan Selvaraj said in a medical bulletin.


Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister R Doraikkannu passed away on October 31 at 11.15 pm at the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai.

Minister was admitted to the Kauvery Hospital in Chennai, on October 13 with breathlessness and had tested positive for COVID-19.

Doraikkannu was undergoing treatment here, after being shifted from a government medical college hospital in Villpuram.

On October 13, the minister experienced unease when he was on his way to attend the funeral of Chief Minister K Palaniswami’s mother, Davusayammal, who had died at the age of 93 at Salem.

Subsequently, Doraikkannu was rushed to the government medical college hospital in Villupuram and from there he was shifted to Kauvery hospital the same day.

He is survived by his wife Bhanumathi, four daughters, and two sons. His mortal remains are likely to be taken to his native place Rajagiri.

Doraikkannu was born on March 28, 1948, at Rajagiri in Thanjavur district. 

He was elected from Papanasam in 2006, 2011, and 2016 Assembly elections and later appointed as the Agriculture Minister and Animal Husbandry in May 2016.
