South India

The Telangana Government has decided to extend the coronavirus lockdown in the state till May 7.

The proposal for the same was put before the Council of Ministers by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR), which was unanimously accepted.

The state had earlier extended the lockdown till April 30. Though the Centre subsequently extended the nation-wide lockdown by May 3, the state cabinet decided to extend it further by four days.

With this, Telangana became the first state to extend the line by another four days, as COVID-19 positive cases continue to surge in the state.

The Chief Minister further said that the cabinet took the decision not to give any relaxation after analysing the issue from all angles.

Earlier, the Centre had issued guidelines for relaxations for certain sectors, it had left it to the states to take a decision on their implementation.

The CM said by this date all containment zones would complete their 14-day mandatory isolation.

He added that, after May 14, any new subsequent containment zone would be taken as one-off unit for the purpose of containment.

The government also requested the landlords to defer collecting of rent from the tenants for three months.

Passenger flight services will not be allowed in the state till May 7 even though the Aviation Ministry is contemplating the launch of services from May 4.

The state government would use more stringent measures to enforce the lockdown in coming days.

Mentioning the Delhi incident of a pizza delivery boy testing positive compelling the authorities to send several families for tests and quarantine, the chief minister said that food delivery apps Swiggy and Zomato will not be allowed to function from Monday
