Cyclone Amphan: PM Narendra Modi announces Rs 1,000 crore immediate relief package for West Bengal


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced Rs 1,000 crore immediate relief package to West Bengal in view of the devastation and casualties caused by cyclone Amphan in the state. 


In a video message after reviewing the situation with Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Basirhat in North 24 Parganas district, Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of the persons deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the persons, who sustained serious injuries during cyclone Amphan landfall in the state.

Assuring rehabilitation of the destroyed lives and livelihoods, PM Modi said a team by the Central government will be sent to West Bengal to access the losses and damaged caused due to cyclone Amphan.

The Prime Minister said all aspects relating to rehabilitation, reconstruction will be addressed and the Centre will always stand with West Bengal in these testing time.

Speaking about the aerial survey, which he conducted with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Prime Minister said:

"My thoughts are with all those who have lost their lives due to the cyclone. Centre and State are working together to provide all possible help to people. With the Governor and the Chief Minister, an aerial survey was done. They have also briefed me on the prevailing situation."

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi conducted an aerial survey of areas affected by cyclone Amphan in West Bengal.

On Thursday, Cyclone Amphan had claimed 72 lives in the state. Almost all have died due to electrocution and falling trees.

As per reports, over 5,000 houses were destroyed in North 24 Parganas alone, while many trees lay uprooted and infrastructure damaged in Kolkata. 

The mobile and internet services were also down as the cyclone had damaged several communication towers. Streets and homes in low lying areas of Kolkata were swamped with rainwater

On Thursday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that Rs 1,000 crore fund has been created for restoration work for areas affected in cyclone Amphan. She had also urged the Prime Minister to visit the state.

The state government also announced a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to to the families of the deceased.
