Cyclone Nivar likely to turn severe; To cross Tamil Nadu, Puducherry today evening

A red category warning for extremely heavy rain has been sounded in coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on November 25 and for Rayalseema on November 26.

 

The Nivar cyclone is expected to make a landfall off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast during late evening of November 25.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, It is expected to make landfall somewhere between Karaikal and Mamallapuram areas around Puducherry with a wind speed of up to 145 kmph.

“Cyclone Nivar over southwest Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the wee hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during the subsequent  12 hours, crossing Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts during November 25 late evening”, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its bulletin at 9 pm on Tuesday. 

The storm currently lies 370km south south east of Chennai coast.

"It is very likely to move west-northwestwards for the next six hours and then northwestwards. It is very likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram during November 25 late evening as a very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph," IMD had said.

With cyclone Nivar expected to make a landfall on eastern coast of Tamil Nadu today, heavy rains lashed several parts of the state including Chennai on Tuesday.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, while people in coastal areas are also being evacuated to shelter houses. 

Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had announced a public holiday on Wednesday urging people to remain indoors. While, essential services will continue to operate.

AS per the report, section 144 has been imposed in Puducherry. The administration has also opened a 24x7 control room coordinating with various teams and has set up relief camps.
