Durai Murugan, TR Baalu elected TN DMK general secretary, treasurer

The post of General Secretary fell vacant after former DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan passed away in March.

 

DMK MLA and senior leader S Durai Murugan was elected party’s general secretary while DMK parliamentary party leader T R Baalu as treasurer at the party’s General Council meeting on Wednesday, September 9.

DMK President MK Stalin said that the two senior leaders were elected unopposed.  The post of General Secretary fell vacant after former DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan passed away in March.

The party also elected former Union Minister A Raja and former state Minister K Ponmudi as Deputy General Secretaries. With their appointment, the DMK now has five Deputy General Secretaries including Subhu Lakshmi Jagadesan, I Periyasamy and Anthiyur Selvaraj.

The party had amended its bylaws to allow five Deputy General Secretaries.  DMK Women’s Wing President and Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi, however, did not get any party post.

Following the death of Anbazhagan, the then Treasurer Duraimurugan stepped down from the post leaving two posts vacant at the top. The general council meeting to fill the vacant posts. Ahead of the meeting, the party had called for applications for the post of General Secretary and Treasurer.

Duraimurgan and Baalu were the only leaders who filed their nomination for election to the post of general secretary and treasurer respectively.  DMK President MK Stalin made the announcement that the two leaders were elected unopposed.

The General Council meeting was held virtually since the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre have not permitted large political gatherings owing to the pandemic. The General Council meeting of the DMK was supposed to be held on March 29. However, the meet was delayed due to the pandemic.
