Ernakulam Medical College hospital to be transformed into COVID-19 treatment center

KOCHI: The Ernakulam district administration in Kerala on Sunday declared that the Medical College in Kalamassery to be transformed into a full-fledged coronavirus treatment centre.

 

Apart from the Covid-19 treatment centre, only the emergency Out Patient (OP) services and dialysis centre will  function from the medical college. OP section at the hospital will be shifted to the nearest government health center.

As per the report, patients who have already been admitted to the hospital with other ailments will be shifted to other hospitals in the district.

Authorities have identified Ernakulam General Hospital, Mattancherry taluk hospital, Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital and some other taluk hospitals for shifting the patients.

Around 400 beds will be made available in the hospital for the purpose. As of now, the medical college has around 500 beds, including the intensive care units. There are 30 beds dedicated for isolation facility for Covid-19 cases. 

The district is currently giving treatment for 12 COVID-19 patients, 23 persons in Isolation Wards  and 3961 persons in homes under surveillance.

Several persons, who have returned from various foreign countries with symptoms of virus, have been kept under observation.

On Sunday, as many as 15 people in Kerala have tested positive for COVID-19, taking the total number of existing positive cases in Kerala to 67, out of which three had earlier recovered. 

As of now, all the 64 confirmed cases are being treated in hospitals across the state.

At least 9776 people were taken off quarantine, after finishing the required isolation period and not showing symptoms.

According to the report, there are 59,295 people in the state under observation, out of which 58,981 are in home quarantine and the others are admitted to the hospitals. 

At present, Kasaragod district has the highest number of COVID-19, with 19 positive cases in the state, followed by Ernakulam district with 12 people. 

Now a total of 10 districts in the state have reported positive COVID-10 cases. The number of COVID-19 cases in various districts are: Thiruvananthapuram (4), Pathanamthitta (9), Kottayam (2), Ernakulam (12), Thrissur (1), Malappuram (4), Kannur (10), Idukki (1), Kasaragod (19), Kozhikode (2)
