Four Nepali nationals, including a woman, have been arrested for looting a businessman's house in the Telangana capital of Hyderabad, police said on Monday.

The four committed the theft on October 19 and were arrested from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and Hyderabad between October 22 and October 25, Rachakonda Commissioner of Police Mahesh M Bhagwat said.

Two of them worked as servants at the businessman's house. When the businessman and other members of his family were away, the duo offered his mother (70) tea laced with sleeping pills, the police said.

After the elderly woman lost consciousness, the duo, along with the other two Nepalis, took away 180 gms of gold ornaments and Rs 10 lakh in cash from the house, they said. Based on a complaint, a case was registered and 15 teams were formed, they said.

The four were arrested and gold ornaments weighing 90 gms and cash of Rs 1.49 lakh out of the booty were recovered, they added.

Earlier this month, a three-member gang of Nepali nationals were arrested for similar looting a businessman’s family at Raidurgam, by drugging them, according to a report in New Indian Express.

The arrested include gang kingpin Netra Bahadur Shahi who guided the domestic help in looting the victim’s house, the police said. The same gang was also involved in another offence at Narsingi.

Police seized Rs 5.20 lakh in cash and gold, all worth Rs 20 lakh, from the accused. Netra Bahadur Shahi, who operates the gang, identifies people who are from his area and working in cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, as domestic help and befriends them.

He convinces them to drug their employers and rob them. Once the employer and his family fall unconscious, the maid calls Bahadur’s team members, who then rob the house and escape to Nepal. Sajjanar cautioned people to do thorough background checks before hiring anyone and also suggested that employers not depend on them completely (with inputs from PTI)
