Honour killing in Telangana: Man killed for marrying rich businessman's daughter

South India

The Cyderabad police have arrested fourteen people, including the woman's parents and uncle for their alleged involvement in the murder.

In what is considered as honour killing, a 28-year-old youth in Telangana was allegedly murdered by his in-laws barely three months after he married the daughter of a rich businessman.

Chinta Yoga Hemanth, a painting contractor, had married 23-year-old Avanti on June 11 in the face of opposition by her family. They belonged to different castes.

According to Times of India, fourteen people, including Avanthi’s parents – D Laxmareddy and Archana have been arrested by the Cyberabad police for their alleged involvement in the murder. Police said Avanti’s father D. Laxma, mother Archana, Yugender, and the others had been plotting ways to get rid of Hemant.

On Thursday evening, the youth was picked up from the heart of Hyderabad's IT corridor at Gachibowli and strangulated in a moving car. His family came to know about the murder on Friday.

Avanti, a B Tech graduate and Hemant had grown up at Chandanagar in Serilingampally mandal and fallen in love eight years ago. They eloped on June 11 and married. This had upset Avanthi's parents who had broken all relations with the couple.

Quoting police officials, a Times of India report said that more than caste, Avanthi's family was upset because Hemanth's family was not financially well-off. The woman's parents are landlords, owning commercial properties in different parts of Hyderabad. Hemanth, on the other hand, took up small-time painting contracts for a living.

On Thursday, Avanthi's two maternal uncles and other relatives, including women, suddenly reached the couple's residence at TNGO Colony in Gachibowli. Apprehending trouble, Hemanth had informed his parents and two other friends about Avanthi's relatives turning up at their doorstep.

Even as my wife and I reached my son Hemanth’s house, I heard him calling out to me in a state of panic. I found that Hemanth and Avanthi were seated in a car and being forcefully taken away. Apart from the car in which my son was seated, there were two other cars following them,’’ Hemanth’s father Murali Krishna was quoted by TOI as saying.

Krishna chased the three cars for some distance but then lost them. Meanwhile, Avanthi, who had managed to escape from her abductors, joined Krishna and the two filed a complaint with the Gachibowli police.

The police started searching for Hemanth but got no clues initially. Late on Thursday night, Cyberabad police made the breakthrough by nabbing Avanthi’s maternal uncle Yugender Reddy and a few others at Shamirpet. They allegedly confessed that Hemanth had been murdered and that his body had been dumped in an open plot along the highway at Kistaiahguda in Sanga Reddy district.

According to police officials, Yugender and three hired assailants – Bichu Yadav, E Krishna and Mohammed Pasha – were present in the car when Hemanth was killed. The victim was first smothered and then strangulated in the car between Sadasivpet and Sanga Reddy.
