In connection with Kerala gold smuggling case, Koduvally municipal councillor taken into custody by Customs

Koduvally municipal councillor has been taken into custody by Customs in connection with the Kerala Gold Smuggling Case.


The customs conducted a raid at the house of Karat Faizal, Left Front councillor of Kozhikode Koduvally municipality, in the gold smuggling case.

According to the news agency ANI report, customs had conducted a raid at his residence this morning, following which he was taken into custody.

As per the report, officials of the Customs Kochi Unit, reached his house at 4 am Thursday morning.

Organisations including the Muslim League came forward with protest marches following the news of the customs raid.

Meanwhile Sandeep Nair, who is the fourth accused in Kerala gold smuggling case, filed an application in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court saying that he was ready to give a confession statement and turn approver in the case.

The Kerala gold smuggling case, which is being probed by the NIA along with the Enforcement Directorate, and Customs, pertains to the smuggling of gold in the state through diplomatic channels.

The matter, which pertains to the smuggling of gold in the state through diplomatic channels, had come to light after 30 kg gold worth Rs 14.82 crores, smuggled in a consignment camouflaged as diplomatic baggage, was busted by the Customs in Thiruvananthapuram on July 5.
