India records biggest single-day spike in Covid-19 cases with 4,213 new cases on Sunday

India recorded its biggest single-day spike in coronavirus cases on Sunday with 4,213 new cases reported from various states and union territories.

With Sunday's spike the total confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country have risen to 67,152, according to the latest update from the Union Health Ministry.

The toll also jumped by 97 taking the total to 2,206. As per the ministry data, as many as 20,917 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged so far. The ministry has categorised at least 44,029 as active cases in the country.

Among the states, Maharashtra recorded the highest spike in the last 24 hours with 1943 new cases and 53 deaths. The total number of cases in the state has now risen to 22,171 while the death toll stands at 832.

The COVID-19 infection continued spreading at an alarming rate in Tamil Nadu for the third consecutive day on Sunday. With 669 cases and 3 deaths, the total tally of cases in the state has crossed 7,000 mark.

With the government allowing repatriation of countrymen stranded abroad and deciding to restart passenger trains, there are concerns that coronavirus cases may go up

The testing capacity for COVID-19 in the country has been ramped up to around 95,000 tests per day, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan had said earlier. And so far a total of over 15 lakh tests have been conducted. The minister said that no new case of COVID-19 has been reported from 10 states or union territories in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra (20,228 cases), Gujarat (7,796), Tamil Nadu (6,535) and Delhi (6,542) are among the worst affected states. The union health ministry will send central teams in 10 states that have witnessed or are witnessing high COVID-19 cases to assist their health departments to facilitate management of the outbreak.
