With 18,552 new cases in the last 24 hours, the highest number of cases in a single day, India's COVID-19 tally reached 5,08,953 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, with an increase of 384 deaths in the last 24 hours, the number of deaths in the country due to COVID-19 has risen 15,685.

According to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of active cases in the country is 1,97,387. Meanwhile 2,95,881 persons have been cured/discharged/migrated.

As India is attempting to flatten the curve of the novel coronavirus, some states are continuing to see a steady rise in cases.

With 1,52,765 confirmed cases of COVID-19 so far, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country. The state registered 5,024 new coronavirus cases on Friday, while the number of fatalities reached 7,106 with 175 new deaths.

This was the seventh day in a row that India registered over 14,000 cases. India is only behind US, Brazil and Russia.

Coronavirus, which originated in China's Wuhan city in December last year, has so far spread to more than 200 countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared coronavirus a pandemic.
