India records highest single day spike with 28,701 cases; COVID-19 tally reaches 8,78,254

With 28,701 new cases in the last 24 hours, the highest number of cases in a single day, India's COVID-19 tally reached  8,78,254 on Monday.

 

Meanwhile, with an increase of  500 deaths in the last 24 hours, the number of deaths in the country due to COVID-19 has risen 23,174.

According to the data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of active cases in the country is 3,01,609. Meanwhile 5,53,471 persons have been cured/discharged/migrated.

As India is attempting to flatten the curve of the novel coronavirus, some states are continuing to see a steady rise in cases.

As per the Health Ministry data, Maharashtra is the worst affected state in India with 2.54 lakh coronavirus cases and more than 10,000 deaths while Tamil Nadu is the second worst-hit state with 1.38 lakh COVID-19 and nearly 2,000 fatalities. The coronavirus cases in the national capital Delhi stands at 1.12 lakh while the death toll is 3,371. 

Coronavirus, which originated in China's Wuhan city in December last year, has so far spread to more than 200 countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared coronavirus a pandemic.
