Sitting Congress legislator from Bidar in Karnataka, Basvakalyan Narayan Rao, died due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Thursday, September 24. He was 66.

Rao was admitted to Manipal hospital in Bengaluru on September 1. His condition deteriorated in the last few days and he breathed his last at 3.55 pm on Thursday, according to hospital authorities.

Rao was critically ill with multi-organ failure and was in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) on multiple supports including ventilator, the hospital said in a statement. He was under constant observation by an expert panel of doctors, the hospital said.

“We deeply regret the loss and express our condolences to his family and friends,” said Manipal Hospital Director Dr Manish Rai, as quoted by PTI.

The death of the legislator comes a day after Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi succumbed to Covid at AIIMS in New Delhi.

Senior leaders, including Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief DK Shivakumar, mourned the loss of Narayan Rao. In a tweet on Thursday, Shivakumar said, "He was a committed Congress leader who was known for his simplicity & service to the poor."

Prior to this, as many as five Congress legislators, including Jewargi MLA Ajay Singh, Sringeri MLA TD Raje Gowda, Hubballi-Dharwad East MLA Abbayya Prasad, Kunigal MLA Dr HD Ranganath, and Anekal MLA B Shivanna had tested positive for Covid-19 and are being treated at various hospitals across Karnataka.
