The young MLA lashed out at the media after they reported about her social media clash with CPM youth wing over the COVID-19 prevention activities

Kerala’s ruling front legislator U Prathibha has courted trouble by equating journalism to flesh trade.

Prathibha, who represent the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district locked horns with the media after they reported about a social media clash with her party’s youth wing-the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).

Two days ago, DYFI local members in Kayamkulam alleged on social media that MLA was not coming to office to coordinate the Covid prevention activities and she is staying home. After that, the MLA came against it saying that a human virus far more terrible than coronavirus was acting against her and added that she will flush them out after the pandemic.

Describing the media reports about the DYFI criticism against her false, the young MLA said it was better for these journalists to go for flesh trade rather than journalism.

“The journalists, who are doing such kind of news reporting, should wash the feet of poor women, who engaged in flesh trade for their livelihood, and drink that water," she said in a Facebook Live.

"I have reached this position with the support of my party leaders and party workers at grass root level and not with the patronage of the media," she said.

After her FB live became a controversy, journalists community came out against the MLA. Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) state president K P Reji in a press note asked her to withdraw her statements and apologize.

CPI (M) district secretary R Nassar has taken strong exception to the remarks made by the MLA and asserted that the concerned party committee will discuss the matter and take appropriate action. The CPI (M) leader said that the comment of Prathibha did not befit the position she held in the public life.

Prathibha clarified that her statement was not against the media but against those who were making an organized gossip. “Some reporters are deliberately giving false news against me,” she said adding that her comment was a spontaneous outburst against them.
