High profile Kerala gold smuggling case accused Swapna Suresh and Sarith P S have revealed the unholy connections between ministers and the UAE consulate in the statements they have given to various national investigating agencies in connection with the case.

While Swapna Suresh said that the State Higher Education Minister had kept close contacts with the consulate authorities in Thiruvananthapuram for a job in the consulate for his friend Alavudeen, Sarith said that Tourism Minister Kadkampally Surendran for a job for his son in UAE.

Swapna said that Jaleel had also kept in touch with her for arranging Ramzan kit for distribution in the state. She revealed that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had sought her help in training his wife to extend a traditional welcome to Sharjah ruler when he visited the state couple of years ago.

She said that the chief minister had also called her to extend condolence on the death of her father. The call was made from the mobile phone of his former principal secretary M Sivasnakaran, who is now under the scanner of Customs and Enforcement Directorate.

Sarith, who had served the consulate as a public relations officer, said that Ministers Kadakampally Surendran and KT Jaleel had visited the UAE Consulate on several occasions. The meetings were in the cabin of the Consul General. I came to know that Kadakampally Surendran visited the Consul General in connection with a job appointment of his son in UAE and KT Jaleel visited the UAE Consulate in connection with the function organised by the Consulate for distribution of Ramadan kits," Sarith PS said in the statement said.

He said that he had met Sivasankaran in his apartment as well as in his office at at the Secretariat. "Sir also visited my house several times. Sivasankar sir visited the UAE Consulate several times for official purposes," he said.

Meanwhile, the Customs department has also registered another case against Swapna Suresh and Sarith PS, both key accused in the Kerala gold smuggling case, for allegedly smuggling currency.

The Kerala gold smuggling case, which pertains to the smuggling of gold in the state through diplomatic channels, which is currently being probed by the National Investigation Agency, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Customs department.

The matter had come to light after 30 kg gold worth Rs 14.82 crores smuggled in a consignment camouflaged as diplomatic baggage was busted by the Customs in Thiruvananthapuram on July 5 (with inputs from ANI)
