Curiously, the rape threat against his daughter came from a social media user after Sethupathi announced his decision to dropped out of the project.

The rape threat meted out to Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi's daughter over the Sri Lankan cricketing legend Muttiah Muralitharan's biopic has evoked strong protests from various quarters in Tamil Nadu.

Expressing outrage over the threat sounded in the social media, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) women's wing secretary and MP Kanimozhi on Tuesday, October 20, said that it is not only barbaric but also extremely dangerous to the very fabric of the society.

The announcement made by the actor about his decision to don the role of the Sri Lankan cricketing legend had angered many in the social media because he had taken a pro-Sri Lankan stand in the civil war in which many Eelam Tamils were killed.

Curiously, the threat against his daughter came from a social media user after he dropped out of the project. Muralitharan himself had recently also issued a statement asking Sethupathi not to portray him in the biopic due to public pressure.

"The perverse intimidation of Vijay Sethupathi's daughter is not only barbaric but extremely dangerous to the very fabric of our society. Making women and children the soft targets is a cowardly act. The police should take stern action against the perpetrator," Kanimozhi tweeted.

In the following tweet, Kanimozhi said, "The only war cowards fight is against women and children. The threat against actor Vijay Sethupathi's daughter is a shame. Trolling women and children should be punished."

Several fans and activists have sought actions against the hate tweets and rape threats for the daughter of actor Vijay Sethupathi. Many netizens have slammed the vile comments of the troll and come in support of the Tamil Nadu star. After concerns were raised against the troll account, Twitter has restricted activity for the account but is yet to delete it.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Police have taken cognisance of the matter and written to Twitter India seeking more details about the account user (with inputs from ANI)
