Pilot among 10 killed as Air India Express flight with 191 passengers from Dubai skids off runway at Calicut airport

Ten persons including a pilot were killed after a flight carrying 191 passengers from Dubai to Calicut skidded off the runway while landing amid heavy rain and fell into a deep gorge on Friday evening.

In the impact, the Air India Express flight was split into two killing the pilot, identified as Deepak Sathe and two passengers. Seven more passengers succumbed to the injuries at various hosptials in Calicut.

The flight was part of the Vande Bharat Mission.

Co-pilot Akhilesh and several passengers sustained serious injuries, said news reports. The mishap remined of the Air India accident that took place in Mangaluru in 2010. All the passengers were killed in that accident.  

The mishap at the Calicut airport occurred at around 7.40 pm and the plane was carrying 175 senior citizens, ten kids and four crew members besides the pilots.

The plane skidded off the runway and tried to take off again, say reports. The attempt reportedly failed and it fell into about 35 feet gorge near a road outside the airport area.

Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reportedly declared an enquiry into the mishap reported Manorama quoting Union Minister V Muraleedharan.

The local people hearing the big noise rushed to the spot for rescue operations. The taxi drivers were the first to reach the spot to take the injured to the nearby hospitals. Soon ambulances were sent to the spot.   

Since the Calicut International Airport is a table-top airport, it is feared that the pilots could not control it. It is suspected that the flight was split into two in the impact of the fall.
