Pranab Mukherjee on ventilator support after surgery, remains critical


Former President Pranab Mukherjee, who underwent a brain surgery, continues to remain critical and is on ventilator support, the Army’s Research and Referral (R&R) Hospital said in a statement. 


On Monday, Former President Pranab Mukherjee was admitted to hospital in New Delhi after testing positive for Covid-19.

“Former President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee was admitted to Army Hospital (R&R) Delhi Cantt at 12:07 hours on 10 August 2020 in a critical condition. Workup at the hospital revealed a large brain clot for which he underwent emergency life-saving surgery. Post surgery he continues to remain critical on ventilatory support. He was also found to be COVID-19 positive,” statment from the hospital read.

On Monday, Mukherjee had announced that he has tested positive for the coronavirus disease. 

“On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for Covid-19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self isolate and get tested for Covid-19,” he had tweeted.

Political leaders across party lines have been tweeting to wish him a speedy recovery.

"The Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu spoke to Smt. Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of the former President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee and enquired about his well-being. Shri Naidu wished for his speedy recovery and good health," Naidu's office tweeted today.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh visited the Army Hospital (R&R) in New Delhi and met the doctors to enquire about the health of the former President.

“Visited the Army Hospital (R&R) in New Delhi and met the doctors to enquire about the health of former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee Ji. I pray for his well being and speedy recovery,” Singh tweeted.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also prayed for speedy recovery of the former President.

Earlier this month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had tested positive for COVID-19.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and Congress leader Siddaramaiah are among other top leaders that have tested positive
