Senior Kerala Congress leader C F Thomas passes away at 81

C F Thomas, who had been representing Changanassery constituency in the Assembly since 1980 without any break, had served as a minister in the Congress-led UDF government during its 2001-2006 tenure.
 

C F Thomas, one of the founding leaders of Kerala Congress, a regional party with strong base among farmers and Christians in Kerala died away at a private hospital in Thiruvalla on Sunday, September 27. He had been undergoing treatment for some illness for the past few months.

He was 81 and is survived by wife and three children. Thomas who entered politics through Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student outfit of the Congress, had been representing Changanacherry in Kottayam district in the Assembly since 1980 without any break.

He quit the Congress and joined hands with veteran leader late KM Mani to float the regional party. Thomas who rose in party hierarchy had served as Minister for Rural Development under the Congress-led UDF government during its 2001-2006 tenure.

He had also held the posts of general secretary, deputy chairman and chairman of the Kerala Congress (M). A close confidante of Mani, joined hands with a faction led by former minister P J Joseph when the suffered a split following the death of Mani in 2019.

Thomas, born to CT Francis and Annamma Francis in 1939, he took degree from Changanacherry SB College and B Ed from NSS Training College and served as a teacher until he was elected to the Assembly in 1980. His funeral will be decided later.
