Shah Rukh’s Zero and Rani’s Hichki: Bollywood gets serious in 2018

A much awaited trailer of Zero is finally out on Monday. Shah Rukh bursts into a New York ballroom in his undergarments, then in jeans and in a waistcoat later, singing and dancing- only this time he is too ‘short’ for the big screen.

Director: Anand Rai

Written & Screenplay by: Himanshu Sharma

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma

2018 seems like a serious year for Bollywood. More stars seem to come down to earth-A vertically challenged character played by Shah Rukh in Zero (to be released in December, 2018); and Rani Mukherji plays a teacher with Tourette syndrome in Hichki (release in February).

Zero is the story of Baua and his love for another disabled person (played by Anushka Sharma). This will be Anushka’s first film as a disabled character. The film was first titled as Katrina Meri Jaan, but later changed because the film is supposed to be about Baua and not about Kaif.

After four years of break Rani returns to screen with Hichki; she plays Naina Mathur, a woman battling with her vocal tics while wanting to be a teacher. And the trailer looks promising. After all we all watched her Black (2005).

The theme of physical disability has always been played by Bollywood in a caricaturist manner. However it was always inspirational, although the story begins with an over exaggerated portrayal of the hardships of the character.

Will Zero and Hichki tell us the story in a different way this time? Have to wait and see.
