South India Covid-19 Updates: 680 fresh cases in southern states, Tamil Nadu tops

As many as 680 new cases of coronavirus cases have been reported from the four southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana on Saturday.

The highest number of 600 cases have been reported from Tamil Nadu, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This brings the total reported cases of coronavirus in Tamil Nadu to 6,009. The data showed 1,605 recoveries and 40 deaths.

Tamil Nadu is among four states in the country to confirm more than 6000 cases. The other states are Maharashtra, Delhi and Gujarat.

Andhra Pradesh reported the second highest coronavirus cases in South India. The state reported 40 new cases as of 8:00 AM on May 9, according to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This brings the total reported cases of coronavirus in the state to 1,887. Among the total people infected as on date, 842 have recovered and 41 have passed away.

Karnataka reported 48 new coronavirus cases as of 8:00 AM on May 9. This brings the total reported cases of coronavirus in Karnataka to 753. Among the total people infected as on date, 376 have recovered and 30 have passed away.

Telangana added 10 new coronavirus cases to the previous day’s tally of 1123. The total number of cases in the state at 8 am on Saturday stood at 1,133. Among the total people infected as on date, 700 have recovered and 29 have passed away.

The return of Keralites from abroad has started bringing new cases to Kerala. Out of 325 people arrived from United Arab Emirates in the state on Thursday tested positive for Covid-19. According to Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan one person came from Dubai and another from Abu Dhabi.

The patient who came from Dubai has been quarantined in Kozhikode and the other at Kochi. Curiously, the passengers who came from the UAE were tested before boarding the flights at Abu Dhabi and Dubai and were found without any symptoms of Covid.

Keralites coming from Oman, Kuwait and Riyadh on Saturday have not undergone any tests before boarding the flights. Elaborate arrangements have been made in all the airports in Kerala for testing them before they are sent for quarantine either at government Covid centres or homes.
