South India Covid-19 Updates: Sharp increase in all five states on Friday

The five southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataaka and Kerala reported 657 new coronavirus cases on Friday, raising concern in health circles. 

Continuing the steep hike in coronavirus cases, Tamil Nadu on Friday (May 15) reported 447 new infections and two more deaths.  This brings the total reported cases of coronavirus in the state to 9,674, according to the data released by Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Among the total people infected as on date, 2,240 have recovered and 66 have passed away. With Friday’s spike in case, Tamil Nadu has leapfrogged Gujarat and Delhi into second place in terms of the number of positive cases.

The state’s cases have been increasing by at least 440 every day for the last 11 days with an average growth rate of 9 per cent per day. The burgeoning number has largely been due to the rapid spread of the virus in Chennai, which accounts for 5,625 cases followed far behind by Thiruvalluvar with 510.

Andhra Pradesh

The total number of coronavirus cases in Andhra Pradesh rose to 2,307 with the state recording 102 new cases as of 8 am on Friday. With no fresh deaths, the toll in the state remained at 48. Out of the 102 new cases, 45 patients were from other states, according to state health department.

With the latest updates, Kurnool, Guntur and Krishna districts continued to be the major hotbeds in the state for Covid-19. Kurnool contributed 8 out of the 57 fresh cases reported in the state on Friday.  Visakhapatnam contributed 2 new cases.

Krishna district reported nine cases, taking its total count to 360. Nellore and Chittoor districts in the red zone in Andhra, reported fourteen fresh cases each. Four other districts of the state did not report any new case, as per the health department bulletin.

Karnataka

The Covid-19 tally in Karnataka breached 1,000-mark on Friday with 45 new cases. Total number of positive cases in the state stood at 1,032. With 35 deaths and 476 discharges, there were 520 active coronavirus cases in the state, the state health department said in its mid-day situation update.

16 new cases are from Dakshina Kannada and 13 in Bengaluru Urban. Five cases are from Uduppi, three each from Hassan and Bidar, two from Chitradurga and one each from Bagalkote, Shivamoga and Kolara, respectively, according to Bangalore Mirror.

Among the new cases, nearly 20 have travel history to Dubai, four to Mumbai and three to Chennai. A three year old is among the six minor infected by the virus. One patient who tested positive for Covid-19 died due to a non-coronavirus cause. While 35 deaths due to Covid-19 have been reported in the state so far.

Telangana

Coronavirus (covid-19) cases in Telangana continued its upward trend with 47 more people tested positive for the novel in the state on Thursday. With this the total Covid-19 tally has risen to 1414. Hyderabad continued to be a major red zone as most of the cases from Telangana are being reported from the state capital. Of the latest 47 cases, 40 were from the capital city itself.

Kerala

The Covid-19 situation in Kerala turned from relief to anxiety with the state recording 16 new on May 15. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told reporters that Wayaand reported five cases, Malappuram four, Alappuzha and Kozhikode two each and Kollam, Palakkad and Kasargod one each.  This brings the total reported cases of coronavirus in Kerala to 576. Among the total people infected as on date, 491 have recovered and 4 have passed away.

Among the new cases, seven came from abroad, four from Tamil Nadu and two from Mumbai. Three contracted the virus through contact with affected people. The chief minister expressed concern over the rise in the past few days from single digit cases for almost a week earlier (with inputs from agencies)
