The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested nine Tamil Nadu fishermen and seized one boat for allegedly fishing in that country's waters, besides damaging fishing nets in a separate incident, officials said on Sunday.

According to the report from the Fisheries department officials, the fishermen were arrested near Neduntheevu on Saturday.

In a separate incident, the Lankan navy personnel allegedly damaged fishing nets in 20 mechanised boats near Katchatheevu on Saturday.

As per the report, they also allegedly hurled stones and bottles on the fishermen.

Fishermen's association representative Sesuraja rued the acts of the Sri Lankan Navy, saying damage to equipment caused distress to the fishermen.

India and Sri Lanka regularly arrest each other's fishermen, who inadvertently enter into their waters due to the absence of any proper technology to confirm the coastline border between Sri Lanka and India.
