Telangana Congress leader arrested for assaulting journalist

The journalist was attacked by the Congress leader and his supporters when he sought comments on party' protest agianst Hathra rape case. 

Telangana Congress leader Feroz Khan was arrested by police on Friday, October 2, after he allegedly assaulted a journalist during a protest rally organised by the party in Hyderabad against the alleged gang-rape and murder of a Dalit girl at Hathras in Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports, Khan was shifted to a general hospital in the city for Covid check-up soon after his arrest. A doctor at the hospital suggested that he should be sent to a mental hospital as "he seems to have lost mental balance".

Police said that Khan will be presented in a court after the check-up. The reporter, who is identified as Abdul Basheer of ANI, was attacked by the Congress leader and his supporters numbering over a dozen when he approached the Congress leader for comments after the party rally was stopped by the police near the Ambedkar statue for holding the protest without permission.

Several Congress workers, including Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Uttam Kumar Reddy, was present during the demonstration. The reporter was rescued by the police and other journalists, who were present at the spot.

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the video clip, Feroz Khan could be seen throwing blows at the journalist. He was soon joined by other Congress workers, who then kicked, punched, shoved and manhandled the ANI reporter. When the police officials tried to protect the victim, they were pushed around by the Congress workers, said OpIndia report (with inputs from news agencies)
