Telangana Congress leaders placed under house arrest ahead of protest against inflated power bills

South India

All senior Congress leaders of Telangana, including state chief Uttam Kumar Reddy, were placed under house arrest ahead of their 'Chalo Secretariat' programme Ministers against the inflated power bills following introduction of new slabs.

The protest was scheduled to be held at 11 am on Thursday, but the police detained the leaders in their houses hours before the scheduled start.

A Hindu report said that police vans were parked in front of the residences of all senior leaders including that of TPCC chief, Congress Legislature Party leader Bhatti Vikramarka, TPCC working president, A. Revanth Reddy, Bhongir MP, Komatireddy Venkata Reddy, MLA T. Jagga Reddy, former PCC chiefs, Ponnala Lakshmaiah and V. Hanmanth Rao, former MP Anjan Kumar Yadav, and they were not allowed to move outside.

Congress leaders said police gave no reason for blocking them to come out of their residences. Manthani MLA, D. Sreedhar Babu was arrested near Ravindra Bharathi on his way to Assembly premises.

Several other leaders across the city were forced to sit in their homes as the police stationed vehicles and men and asked them not to leave their houses or they would be arrested.

The Congress leaders said no Chalo Secretariat call was given and all that the party wanted was to meet the Chief Minister and the Ministers to represent to them on the inflated power bills affecting crores of consumers and the rising cases of coronavirus.

Hitting out at the Chief Minister for the arrests, Congress MP Venkat Reddy Komatireddy said Telangana was facing a dictatorial rule.

He said how can the government ask the people to pay inflated power bills while asking the same not to pay rent for three months during the lockdown. Instead of providing relief to people it was burdening them and adding to the woes.

He urged the government to withdraw the bills and provide relief to the people who are suffering due to the Covid-19 related lockdown (with inputs from ANI)
