Telangana police suffers first COVID-19 death

Telangana currently has a total of 608 active cases with the state recording a total of 1,661 Covid-19 cases to date, according to the daily Covid-19 bulletin released by the health department.

Telangana reported its first death of police personal due to COVID-19 with a 37-year-old constable succumbing to the deadly virus on Wednesday night in the state capital of Hyderabad.

The deceased was identified as Dayakar Reddy who was posted at the Kulsumpura Police Station. He died due to the COVID-19 infection on Wednesday night. He is learnt to have contracted the virus while performing lockdown duty at Purana pul junction check post in Hyderabad’s old city area.

Reports said that the deceased had worked there for15 days. Reddy, who began to suffer from the symptoms of COVID-19, was shifted to Gandhi hospital where he tested positive for coronavirus and was undergoing treatment in the state-run hospital. He breathed his last on Wednesday night at around 10.30 pm, a report in Sakshi daily said.

Reddy, who hails from Nalgonda district, is survived by his wife and three children. His family tested negative for the killer virus. The DGP, while paying tribute to the deceased policeman as a 'frontline COVID-19 warrior', also assured full help to his bereaved family.

Samples of 16 policemen who were in contact with him have been collected and sent for testing. Four of them have been kept in home quarantine.

The state reported two more Covid-19 deaths on Wednesday. One of the persons who died was a 61-year-old man from Motinagar, and the other was an 81-year-old man from Chandrayangutta in the city, a report in Deccan Chronicle said.

This takes the Covid-19 deaths to six in just two days and to 40 so far in the state. On Wednesday, a total of 27 new cases were registered of whom 12 were labourers returning to the state from other parts of the country. Since people began returning to Telangana from other states, as many as 89 of them in different districts in the state have tested positive for the disease.

The rest of the cases were from Greater Hyderabad area, with nearly all of them coming from two families in Asifnagar locality in the Old City of Hyderabad.

Over the past few days, the state has reported Covid-19 cases from the districts of Medchal-Malkajgiri, Sangareddy, Ranga Reddy, Jagitial, and Hyderabad.
