TN custodial deaths: Thootthukudi SP removed

South India

The Tamil Nadu government has removed Thootthukudi district superintendent of police Arun Balagopalan soon after Madras High Court directed the Crime Branch CID to take over the probe into the custodial death of a father and son.

Additional Chief Secretary S K Prabhakar has posted Villupuram SP S Jeyakumar in his place. Arun has been asked to report to the DGP office under compulsory wait.  Meanwhile, the home department appointed S Murugan, IG of Economic Offence wing, as the new IG of South Zone replacing Shanmugarajeswaran who retires on Tuesday.

P Jayaraj and his son J Benicks were picked up by police and put in Kovilpatti sub-jail on June 21 as they had kept their mobile phone accessories shop in the Sathankulam main bazaar area open during the curfew timing of the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

On Tuesday, based on the suo motu case initiated on the complaints of intimidation by the Sathankulam Judicial Magistrate against Thoothukudi police officials and subsequent summons of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, the SP Arun Balagopalan along with his DIG appeared in court to brief it about the actions taken by him over the custodial deaths.

After perusing the post-mortem report, the court observed that there are grounds for filing a case against the police officials in connection with the custodial deaths (with inputs from agencies)
