Top political leaders pay tribute to Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary


NEW DELHI: The nation on Tuesday memorized and paid tribute to Indira Gandhi on her 102nd birth anniversary.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Indira Gandhi on twitter on her birth anniversary.
“Tributes to our former PM Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary," Modi wrote on Twitter.
Interim Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also paid tribute to late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at Shakti Sthal here.
Other political leaders, including former President Pranab Mukherjee and several other party leaders also paid homage to the late Prime Minister.
"On her birth anniversary, we pay homage to India's first female Prime Minister, the Late Smt Indira Gandhi. Her will and determination led our country to great heights. Her contributions to India's national security, economy & foreign policy will always be cherished," Congress tweeted.
She was born on November 19, 1917, and died on October 31, 1984, by two of her own security guards- Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, who gunned her down at her Safdarjung Road residence.
She was the only child of Jawaharlal Nehru and Kamala Nehru, started her political carrier after her father’s death in 1964. She served as a PM for three terms lasting almost 16 years and married Feroze Gandhi. She had two sons Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.
Her elder son Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest Prime Minister of India at the age of 40 and was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber. Her younger son, Sanjay died in a plane crash in 1980.
