Total lockdown in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore for four days from Sunday

The Tamil Nadu government has put five corporations in the state under total lockdown for three to four days from April 26.

State chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said in a statement that Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai corporations will be under lockdown from 6am on April 26 till 9pm on April 29 while Salem and Tirpur corporations between 6am on April 26 and 9pm on April 28.

The chief minister said the decision was taken as the spread of COVID-19 is still severe in urban areas of the state. The action has been taken on the basis of the recommendation made by the expert committee on Covid-19 appointed by the state government.

The chief minister said that shops that were so far permitted will be barred during this period in these urban areas. Vehicle movement will also be severely restricted. Only certain essential services would be allowed in these areas during the period.

Wholesale vegetable markets like Koyambedu will be allowed to function with necessary guidelines. Similarly, mobile vegetable and fruit shops will be allowed. But no other shop will be allowed to open.

Here is list of outlets allowed to be opened during lockdown period.

  • Medical services like hospitals, laboratories in hospitals, pharmacies, ambulances and funeral vehicle services
  • Secretariat, health and family welfare, police, revenue and disaster management, electricity, Aavin, local bodies and water supply departments with minimum required staff.
  • Central government offices and banks with 33% strength.
  • Amma canteens and ATMs.
  • Restaurants only for home delivery based on the orders received through phone.
  • Attendants going to homes for elders, disabled people and destitute.
  • Community kitchens run by district administration for destitute and social welfare department and local bodies.
  • Voluntary organisations and other organisations with permission from the officials concerned.

The statement all other activities other than will be prohibited. Other government offices, including registration department, will not function. The information technology workforce is allowed to work from home. No private institution will function.

The existing lockdown measures will continue in other corporations and areas. The chief minister said the containment areas would be under strict control, where disinfectants will be sprayed twice a day and movement of people will be restricted in other parts of the corporations.

If anyone violates the total lockdown order, not only their vehicles be seized but strong action will be taken against them. Since coronavirus is infectious and could easily transmit to individuals, the chief minister requested the people to fully cooperate the government (with inputs from Times of India).
