Ahead of the Martyrs’ Week from July 28, two Maoists including a woman were allegedly shot dead in an encounter with the police on the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha Border (AOB).

The incident took place in the Gunjedu area bordering Malkangiri district in Odisha on Sunday, July 26, according to media reports.

Police were on high alert in the agency area as it has been witnessing a series of incidents for the last 10 in connection with the preparations for the Maoist Martyrs’ week. An exchange of fire took place between the police personnel and the Maoists in the forest area in the Visakhapatnam agency on July 19.

A senior Maoist leader was injured in the exchange of fire, a media report said citing sources. Police personnel have recovered five kit bags and a 303 rifle from the site. The Maoists had reportedly dug up a road between Tamilawada and Chintagupa to disrupt traffic in the Agency area, according to an Indian Express report.

The police have intensified combing operations in the forest area, particularly in Pedabayalu, Rudakota and Munchingput in AOB to nab the top Maoist leaders who are reportedly holed up in the forest area as they were injured in the exchange of fire. The police are searching for all vehicles in the Agency area as part of the stepped-up vigil.

Meanwhile, posters surfaced against the Martyrs’ Week being observed by Maoists. The posters by Alluri Adivasi Abhivruddhi Samithi appeared in Busiputtu, Kumada, Rangabayalu, Lakshmipuram and Munchingput areas. The Samithi asked the Maoists what benefit Girijans would get from the Martyrs’ Week. It said how far it was justified to observe the Martyrs’ Week when they were killing innocent tribals.

Meanwhile, in Telangana, security personnel intensified search operations in view of the Maoist Martyrs week. A total of 500 Special Party, Cat Party, and Greyhounds forces are sifting through the forests in the Pranahita river catchment villages.
