Two Navy officers die as glider crashes at Cochin Naval Command

A Navy team rushed to the spot and shifted the two officers to INS Sanjeevani, the Navy Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

In a shocking incident, two Navy personnel died as a glider on routine flight crashed in Kochi in the southern state of Kerala on Sunday, October 4, morning.

A Defence spokesperson said identified the deceased as Lt Rajeev Jha and Petty officer Sunil Kumar. The 39-year-old Rajiv Jha is a native of Dehradun while Sunil Kumar, 29, hailed from Bhoj in Bihar.

According to the defence spokesperson, the naval power glider was on a routine training sortie and took off from INS Garuda. It crashed near Thoppumpady bridge close to the naval base at around 7 am. A technical snag in the glider led to the mishap.

People who were out for a morning walk saw the glider crashing and informed Harbour police.  A Navy team rushed to the spot and shifted the two officers to INS Sanjeevani, the Navy Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

The wreckage was salvaged and taken to the Kochi Naval Base. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered by the Southern Naval Command into the incident.
