Voting underway for Telangana's GHMC polls

 Over 74 lakh eligible voters are are eligible to vote today in the election to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation or GHMC. 


Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections in 150 wards are being held on December 1. 

According to the report, the polling began at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. 

The time has been extended by an hour due to COVID-19. Wearing of face mask is mandatory for voters arriving at the polling stations and people not wearing masks will not be permitted into the polling station. 

Earlier, the state Election Commission had decided to conduct polls with the ballot papers due to coronavirus.

Telangana Minister and TRS leader, KT Rama Rao, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and few other key figures had cast their votes.

Over 74 lakh voters will decide the political fortunes of 1,122 candidates at 9,101 polling stations.

A total of 74, 67,256 people are eligible to cast their votes. The electorate constitutes 38, 89,637 men, 35, 76,941 women and 678 others.

The civic body election is a high-stakes battle for the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi, the BJP, trying to make inroads, and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM.

In the 2016 elections, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had won 44 seats while the TRS won 99 seats followed by the BJP which only managed to secure 4 seats. Meanwhile, two seats each were won by the TDP and Congress.

The counting of votes would be taken up on December 4.
