The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka has allowed industries to resume operations in nine districts unaffected by Covid-19.

Industries have resumed operation in Yadgir, Koppal, Raichur, Haveri, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Chamarajanagar and Kolar. The exemption will not apply to those located within district headquarters.

The government has also allowed movement of labourers within the state to ensure availability of workers for industries to resume operations. State Chief Secretary TM Vijaya Bhaskar directed district administrations to arrange for KSRTC buses to transport laborers to their native places or to places of work.

The circular specified such movement must be according to the Covid safety protocol: Labourers must wear masks and gloves, and each bus should seat only 40% of its capacity to ensure social distancing.

Across the state, thousands of labourers are stranded at work sites in different cities or stuck at home without a way to get back to their livelihood. Thousands of workers at MSMEs will benefit

The factories must get authorisation in their respective districts and provide an undertaking that standard operating procedures stipulated by the government will be implemented. “It may take a few days for these industries to open in the districts after procedures are followed,” said a Times of India report.

The TOI report said that the decision will help thousands working in small and medium industries in these districts. Yadgir, Koppal and Raichur, for instance, house a large number of rice and spinning mills. Kolar is home to automobile biggies like Honda and Eicher, which have employed more than 10,000 people.

Though several business outlets such as hotels, homestays and dhabas were allowed to operate earlier, not many have opened yet, mainly due to lack of manpower. The workers who come from villages to towns and cities for work complained they had to return home as they were stopped for checking at several places and harassed over passes that have not been issued yet (with inputs from TOI).
