Congress leader OM George surrenders in sexually assaulting a minor tribal girl case


MANANTHAVADY: Kerala Congress leader OM George, who is booked under POSCO act for sexually assaulting a minor tribal girl, surrendered before the Mananthavady DySP on Tuesday.

He has been absconding soon after the incident. As per the report, he was hiding in Karnataka for the past one week. The police had registered a case against him.

A case has been registered against him under section -6 of POCSO Act, along with IPC section 376 (rape) and relevant sections of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

OM George was sexually abusing a minor girl for one and a half years. She was working as a maid in his house.

The incident came into light when the victim tried to commit suicide. Later, the parents informed ChildLine on the matter, then the ChildLine activists informed the incident to the police.

A case was filed against him by the victim’s parents and the victim has been shifted to a government shelter home.

“The girl's parents used to go for household jobs at George's house. The girl also worked there during the school holidays. He sexually abused her at multiple situations when the girl was not around her parents”, said the complaint.

The Congress party suspended him from the party membership soon after his name surfaced in the heinous crime.

KPCC chief Mullapally Ramachandran had directed the block mandalam committee members to conduct a probe against him and submit the report.

OM George was a noted Congress leader in Sulthan Bathery and former panchayat president from here.

The girl's statement was recorded before the magistrate. Identification parade and other legal proceedings are underway to record his arrest. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
