CHENNAI: The Madurai International Airport joined the other international airports in the state, such as Chennai, Tiruchi and Coimbatore in getting the e-Visa facility.
Previously many foreign tourists arriving here with e-visa and have been sent back to the airports from where they arrived. This facility is expected to benefit a large number of tourists from Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the UAE, Mauritius, the US and the UK.
The facility will be done online and it does not require an intermediary or agent. The move is the latest initiative of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry which has launched the UDAN scheme linking Chennai with Salem.
Applicants could apply through online, a minimum of four days in advance with a window of 120 days. Their passport had to be valid for at least six months. An additional document is required based on the type of e-visa. The applicants should have a copy of the ETA and present it at the airport immigration counter.
According to the report, during the month of March 2018, a total of 2.46 lakh tourist arrived on e-Tourist Visa. It was 1.46 lakh during the month of March 2017 and the report shows a growth of 68.8 percent.
From January-March 2018, a total of 7.62 lakh tourists arrived here and it was 4.67 lakh during January-March 2017, registering a growth of 63.0 percent
Madhurai becomes the 26th airport in the country to get this facility.
