Suraj Panwar bags silver in Men's 5000m race walk in Youth Olympics


BUENOS AIRES: India's Suraj Panwar clinched a silver in men's 5000m race walk event in the ongoing Youth Olympic Games to open the country's medal account in athletics.


"It's a great feeling and I had put in a lot of hard work for the Games. It is my first medal for India and next target is to win a medal in the senior level", Panwar said.

 In a new format, there are no finals in track and field in the Youth Olympics and each event is held twice, with results from both rounds counting towards the final standing

He finished second on the podium with a clock timing of 20:35:87 and 20:23:30 in two stages of the competition.

Oscar Patin of Ecuador clinched the gold medal with an overall timing of 40:51:86 Jan Moreu of Puerto Rico's finished third to claim the bronze with a clock timing of 41:59:29.

This is India's first medal in the athletics category and third overall.
